IRISH NEWSPAPER ADVERTISING REVENUE, 1984-2010

Interesting correlation between house prices and newspaper advertising revenue.
It’s something always talked about - how much newspapers relied on the housing bubble for income.
First of all, newspaper advertising revenue from 1984 to 2010, adjusted for inflation (2010 as base year).
Same figures, unadjusted for inflation.
And here’s house prices and newspaper advertising revenue, with 1984 as the base year.

While newspapers were certainly over-reliant on property advertising, property prices tend to be a good indicator of economic growth. Rising growth, rising prices. Plummeting economy, plummeting prices. I’d say if you put GDP shifts on a graph with advertising shifts, you’d find a pretty similar result.
If there was some way to control for overall economic growth, and separate out house prices, you could have some interesting conclusions.
