Dec 1st, 2010 by Conor McCabe
[From Trade Union TV]
100,000 people marched through along the Liffey to the GPO filling up O’Connel Street. The march was in opposition to the austerity plans that were being discussed by the IMF ECB and the Irish Government.
Ruth McCabe read out extracts from the 1916 Proclaimation. Frances Black sang of the hypocrisy of criminalising Traveller culture while the accumulation of wealth and business culture celebrated. Speeches wer made by Jack O’Connor, President of SIPTU, Marie Doyle from Congress Retired Workers Committee and an empassioned Siobhan O’Donoghue ripped up a copy of the 4 year National ‘Disaster’ Plan as she renamed it. A Laura Ashley worker, who is surrently on strike, spoke of the trend of profitable companies to sack workers to shore up profits and Pete O’Driscoil, an unemployed apprentice, spoke of the meagre options for youth. Christy Moore managed to capture the essential anger against the bankers and corrupt politicians declaring, finally, that ‘the system doesn’t work’.
