I’m using so much of Ruth McManus‘ work for my chapter on 20th century Irish housing it’s embarrassing.
Her book, Dublin 1910-1940: Shaping the City and Suburbs (Four Courts Press, 2002) is in the public library system, and is available for purchase from Four Courts here.
I’m also drawing heavily from her 2003 article for International Labor and Working-Class History journal, entitled ‘Blue Collars, “Red Forts” and Green Fields: Working Class Housing in Ireland in the Twentieth Century.’
She says on her website that the article is available for free from the Cambridge Journals website, but it’s a dead link.
However, I’m going to assume that it’s ok to reproduce the article online for research purposes, so here it is below.
Have a read. It’s excellent.
The other book I’m drawing heavily from is by Murray Fraser, John Bull’s Other Homes: State Housing and British Policy in Ireland, 1883-1922 (Liverpool University Press, 1996).
There’s a few copies of it on Amazon. Well worth getting.
[PDF of McManus’ article is here.]

Excellent article. Thanks for posting.
