A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE INTERNET
Apr 9th, 2010 by Conor McCabe
A couple of weeks back I got an email from a publisher, asking whether I was thinking of writing a book, and if so would I keep them in mind. So I wrote back saying yeah, I’ve got a couple of ideas, and I sent them on a proposal. I gave them a brief synopsis of what I’d like to write, a list of chapters, and a sample chapter. They got back onto me yesterday and said that they were interested, and so for the next six months I’m working on a book.
It’s to be 70,000 words in length, with the manuscript due for the end of September.
The working title is: NAMA, Property and Ireland: a historical perspective
In essence there’ll be little by way of discussion that I haven’t already covered on this blog over the past three years. And the sample chapter I sent in to them was an extended version of this post here.
The book will also look at economic class relations in Ireland - again something I’ve talked about in detail over the years.
Anyways, that’s me for the next few months.

Congrats Conor. Hope I’ll have an autographed copy in my letter box for Christmas… if the bank hasn’t repossessed by then
Was gonna ask you if you took yourself for Frankie Howerd hence the title of this post - but I see he wasn’t even in the film in question.. (mixing up UP POMPEI! with A.F.T.H.O.T.W.T.T.F.)
So is it Phil Silvers ye take yerself for ???
Actually I got them mixed up as well. I thought Frankie Howerd was in that film.
Go maire tú!
Excellent, congratulations
That lights of the city post is lodged in my head from before, it’s a great piece of analysis and writing.
Looking forward to the book launch!
Congrats Conor. Well deserved. I might even be able to arrange a favourable review on Irish Left Review
Congrats Conor!
Congratulations Conor, fair play.
Fantastic stuff, enjoy your late night coffee Microsoft Word sessions.
In all seriousness- well done. Publishers ARE reading t’internets then, for more than blogs on cosmetics.
Thanks for the comments. Sure we’ll see how it plays out I suppose, but, yeah, not a bad opportunity alright.
Congratulations, Conor. That’s a very tight time frame in which to turn around a book.
That’s true. Pretty much everything else is on hold until October.
Not everything, I hope.
Conor, just thinking about it this is the break that the blogging left has been waiting for for some time now. It’s a good good day and a validation of the work you’ve done over the years.
Just as long as you keep up Dublin Opinion and the ILR and… No pressure!
Congratulations Conor. Well done.
Cheers Adrian. I was over with Emmet at a history conference in Belgium at the start of the week. Flying the flag for Irish labour history anyway!

Congrats Conor. I look forward to reading it…
