Thank you for the lovely surprise of coming upon your blog and finding Liam and Tommy filling the air with the poignant reminder of these two powerful troubadours and what we have lost in their passing.
But like all who bring music into our lives the legacy of Liam Clancy and Tommie Makem live on in their recordings and film clips. Technology does indeed get it right from time to time.
Better comment on this while it’s still on the 1st page.
Good choice Conor - and you managed to find a rare clip with no bloody Aran sweaters in it (I thought that in all of Ireland only a certain Mech. Drawing teacher from Kerry possesed a shirt like that…)
Been a heavy couple of years for the big names of the ballad boom. Always had the feeling Liam Clancy had the heckles up in the trad crowd, for whatever reason (his personality, their commercial success… never too quick in understanding that trad crowd). Can’t argue with him as a performer - with a glowing reference from Mr. Zimmerman and all.
Just a few other videos - this one, if it’s still working, leads on to over an hour from the Late Late in 1984 - some good songs but especially some good anecdotes - and a lovely Calor Kosangas heater as a prize in there somewhere :
He pops up in several places in ‘No Direction Home’ the start of which is here (never thought I’d ever hear ‘Clancy Bros.’ & ‘James Baldwin’ in the same sentence, but it happens here) :
And finally, a lament for lost love, beautifully sung and played, to complement the Parting Glass :
All the friends that e’er ye had, they are sorry at your going away
