LA TIENDA NO TIENE PLÁTANOS

I first came across this on Voices en Español, one of my favourite Spanish learning blogs. A pretty funny homage to telenovelas and crap Spanish speakers (like me).
Enjoy.

I probably speak it even worse than you do (Orwell refers to his “villainous Spanish”, and that will do as a description) but I think the “los” would be omitted, ¿verdad?
jeje. Si. es verdad. Gracias.
I think I mentioned this before, but there was one time I walked into a tobacconist and said, with the utmost confidence, “Yo quiero una silla”. The man at the counter just stared at me and said, “¿Que?” and then, in English, said “do you want a stamp?” I had gotten silla (chair) and sello (stamp) mixed up in my brain. ugh! Oh well.
I once told one of my students that ‘me puedes pagar con un jeque si quieres’, instead of ‘me puedes pagar con un cheque’. That is, you can pay me with a sheikh if you like.

A rare enough commodity to use as a means of exchange considering how the moors were run out of Spain all those years ago.
I know, queue drum thump and cymbal crash
Conor, thanks very much for mentioning my blog on yours. Those videos are very funny and I’m glad more people are seeing them and getting a kick out of them. And thanks to everyone for the extra laughs via these comments. The one about the sheikh is a real winner!
Thanks for the comment, Eleena. Big fan of your site, especially the podcasts!
Donagh - don’t ever be surprised of what a former DG of the BBC is capable of getting up to - especially in terms of terms of payment… get the drummer to do his thing again and I’ll get me coat…
Non comprendo gli spaghetti westerni e no liko. No un jeque. (Not chique?) I’d better stick to Franglais, hombre.
