Another Third Party Reports from the Picnic
Sep 2nd, 2008 by Donagh
As Jim mentioned, not one of the Dublin Opinion breed made it to Electric Picnic last weekend. However plenty of other people did, so there’s a pretty good chance that you’d hear about it from someone. Even if you do cover your ears and say ‘lalalala’ when someone in work was going on about it, you’d probably still get to hear a detailed account while sitting in a cubicle in the loo or as you are queuing for your lunchtime latte. I got my detailed account though from my mate Alan, who brought along his two wonderfully precocious kids Dylan and Lauren.
He doesn’t have any photos though. Anyway, here’s his detailed account.
Some highlights:
-
Ham Sandwich - never would have thought these local upstarts could rock so hard, probably the best stage performance of the whole festival, they clearly just loved it so much it was infectious
Goldfrapp - huge electro sounds, sounded great in a field
Hadouken - they threw out big foam ‘H!’ gloves into the audience, punk/rave music and dance mayhem, much fun.
Tindersticks - we got really close for this one, they’re still good, which was a nice surprise
Franz Ferdinand - quite a party
Grinderman – got to listen to about four songs, they were vicious
The Kills - sleazy garage rock euphoria, Lauren spotted Kate Moss side-stage
Sinead O’Connor - musically limp to start but Lauren was arm-to-arm across the barrier with her legendary boyfriend (is it Sly or Robbie?)
These New Puritans - obvious Fall influences and simply the best drumming I’ve ever seen
Sex Pistols - well, Dylan thought Lydon mooning the audience was funny
My Bloody Valentine - we stood outside the tent because of the airplane-engine-volume but the loveless stuff was flawless
Breeders - nice to hear Kim Deal
Lowlights
- Missing Foals, CSS, Gomez, Gutter Twins
Sigur Ross - disappointing

cool. who is sinead dating, anyone know? pretty sure it’s either sly dunbar or robbie shakespeare - who played on and produced ‘throw down your arms’?
Ah that Sly and Robbie. I’ve no idea who Sinead’s current paramour is, but for a moment there I thought she had the good taste for once to attach herself to one of the legendary Reggae producers. Although if she had it wouldn’t surprise me if she decided to play one off the other.
I agree with you, Hamsandwich won me over on Sunday morning. They were just brilliant-the performance had me in a good mood for ages. Great start to the best day of music!
Don’t go to dem bleddy Picnics anymore since they went electric….
